Dr Geoff Niethe will present Recent advances in the role of Phosphorus in beef cattle.

Besides making a major contribution to the economies of Queensland, the NT and the Pilbara and Kimberley in WA, the beef industry offers the only real reason for vast regions of outback Australia to remain inhabited and viable.  A significant portion of the industry is operated on soils low in P.  The adoption of P supplementation to livestock over the growing season in P deficient regions provides a  real ‘silver bullet’ for producers trying to remain viable yet the uptake has been less than impressive. It is vital that not only producers but also advisors, extension officers and consultants working in the industry fully understand the role of phosphorus in their production systems.  This presentation will  reveal the latest research findings, update your knowledge of role of phosphorus in beef cattle, and give you confidence to provide sound recommendations to clients and the general public.

Dr Sandra Steel will present One Health.

Clinical management of zoonoses in human and animal patients can optimised using One Health approach with cross-professional collaboration between medical and veterinary practitioners. Our recent study, using parallel surveys of Australian GPs and veterinarians, explored clinician experience, concern, confidence and current practices regarding zoonoses management as well as willingness to engage in cross-professional collaboration where it is beneficial to overall health outcomes. The study has provided baseline data showing a need for change in both clinical and continuing professional education, especially for GPs, to better equip frontline practitioners in the area of zoonoses management. Further research is needed to explore pathways to encourage and facilitate cross-professional referral and collaboration to improve clinical outcomes for both human and animal patients.
